VinFast Debuts an Armored EV

Vietnam recently celebrated 80 years of independence at the country’s newly built Vietnam Exposition Center in Hanoi. The celebration reminds them all of their August Revolution in 1945 to become a country that could develop its own future. VinFast, a Vietnamese car company, engineered and built a new armored all-electric SUV, one of the first of its kind in the world, to celebrate the occasion.

An Armored EV

The VinFast Lac Hong 900 LX armored car shuttled various heads of state around during the 80th National Day Parade and showed that VinFast is a company built around innovation. The bodywork was clad with impacts from different types of bullets to show off the testing the vehicle endured.

What It Took to Build The 900 LX

Testing an armored car is no small feat, and VinFast says the Lac Hong 900 LX took 440 shots from various types of firearms and 11 explosive tests in the Beschussamt Ulm center in Germany. The 900 LX was awarded the VPAM VR7, a ballistic standard that’s specific to armored vehicles. This means governments and wealthy individuals can use the VinFast armored vehicle to protect important people. A well-known Canadian company called INKAS, which specializes in armored vehicles, helped design and develop the new armored EV.

Other One-Off VinFast Vehicles

The car company also brought a custom convertible VF9 and a series of 12 VF9 police vehicles that will be sent to police stations around the country.

A Lot of Work Goes into Creating a Special Car

The open-top VF9 took a total of 2,400 hours to build, which required the removal of the B, C, and D pillars, as well as supporting the A pillars without a roof. The VF9 received a redesigned front grille, a new paint job, a unique leather interior, and upgrades to the electrical system. The patrol vehicles also received special upgrades, including flag mounts, lights, sirens, and a redesigned hood and grille. The company said it took between 60 and 80 hours per vehicle to prepare them for the event.

What This Means for VinFast and You

Car Testing Mom Gives the VF 9 a Week-long Family Road Test

Growing families inevitably mean that the family car will grow as well. Generations ago, this could have meant transitioning from a sedan to a station wagon. Today, we are all essentially driving wagons with our crossovers and SUVs, so the transition is more likely to be from a two-row to a three-row SUV. The latter can seat six, seven, or sometimes eight people securely and comfortably, though the comfort for adult passengers in the third row can vary significantly depending on the model.  

Family Road Trip - Testing the VF9

The downside of all this space is usually mpg, as the vehicle size and the powerful engine needed to haul it can make these vehicles quite thirsty. One possible fix for that is the 3-row EV, which is far more efficient than its gas-powered counterparts. The VinFast VF 9 is one of the few 3-row SUVs on the market. Since these vehicles are often driven by moms, Jana Askeland, host of Real Mom Car Tours videos, drove the VF 9 for a week to share her impression of whether the VF 9 has what it takes to be the vehicle for American families. Ewing VinFast of Plano provides the highlights of her review.

With an exterior by Italian design firm Pininfarina, the VF 9 has a remarkably clean look on the front, rear, and profile, where the C-pillars taper in the middle to display the brand’s “V” logo. Fake vents, unusual trim pieces, or unnecessary character lines are absent everywhere. As a nice and unique touch, the key fob matches the vehicle’s exterior color. 

The inside is similar, with a 15.6-inch screen covering most of the controls, including permanent climate controls on the lower edge for instant access. The traditional gauge cluster has been replaced by a head-up display that is standard across the model line. Redundant driver information can be found on the upper left of the screen.

Mom drivers aren’t known for their lead feet. However, Jana still found the VF 9 impressive when acceleration is needed with 400 horsepower and 447 lb-ft of instant torque, enabling a transition from still to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds. Unlike the VF 8, both the Eco and Plus have the same power and dual motors for all-wheel drive.

Range on the VF 9 is an EPA-estimated 287 miles, and the combined MPGe (energy equivalent of miles per gallon) is 68, a figure nearly three times higher than what you’ll find on any gas-powered 3-row SUV. As with any EV, ownership is ideal when you can charge at home. But when you charge on the road, the VF 9 is estimated to go from 10% to 75% in about 31 minutes. This will give you 186 miles or about two and a half hours of driving at 75 mph before you reach 10% again. While this may not match gas-powered rivals, road trips with kids rarely go for two hours between stops anyway.

The test vehicle was a Plus trim with second-row captain’s chairs, accommodating a total of six passengers. Jana demonstrated how easy it is to access the third row using the tilt-tumble function of the second row seats, which creates plenty of space for entering and exiting the third row. Third-row passengers have access to charging ports and large windows to the outside, while the Plus model features a glass roof that extends overhead.

In the meantime, first- and second-row passengers can enjoy heating, and on the Plus trim, ventilation, and even a massage function with multiple settings, which by itself should keep the kids entertained. When stopped, you can watch videos downloaded from YouTube or game apps on the large center screen. All models feature a wireless smartphone charger, Wi-Fi connection, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Cabin storage spaces are plentiful, and dropping or raising the rear seats is simple. At the same time, the VF 9 is a luxurious place to spend time, with the large center screen, attractive vegan leather that looks and feels great, electric door releases (with manual backup), and that truly impressive glass roof on the Plus.

The VinFast VF9 is Worth the Hype

When it comes to family-sized SUVs, there are plenty of vehicles on the market. But, when it comes to an EV that’s large enough for a full-size family with three usable rows, there are only a few, with the VinFast VF9 being one of the best. A New, Fresh Review of The VF9

In a recent review by YouTuber Kim Java, she asked herself whether or not the new VF9 was worth the hype for families. With three kids all in car seats, the VF9 is able to handle all that, plus strollers and gear in the rear.

A Cargo Space Rundown

One of Kim’s first tours to show viewers the new VF9 was to help show off the vast interior and cargo space. Behind the third-row seats when they’re upright, owners will have 7.5 cubic feet of cargo space. However, that doesn’t count the amount of space that’s under the floor that normally holds your tire inflator, charging cables, and can also stow bags and backpacks. Folding the third-row seats flat makes way for 33 cu.ft., which is perfect for larger dogs. Or, if you are traveling with items that need to be secured, two tracks run along the edge in the rear and have four tiedown anchors to tether objects so they don’t go all over the place.

A Word from Kim Java

Hopping into the second row, Kim said, “Let’s go ahead and get inside. The first thing I notice is how spacious the overall feeling is inside of here. You have so much room. Lots of room for your legs, so much headroom. And there it just has this illusion of so much space because of this huge, fixed glass roof. And even the third row has a glass roof above them, which is really nice.”

The Third Row Is Good for Kids and Adults

With the second-row captain’s chairs taken up by car seats and a third car seat in the rear, a friend of Kim’s decided to climb into the rear to see how much room was left for him. At 6’2″, he said the third row featured the most legroom he’d ever experienced in a three-row SUV.

VinFast Does Things Intelligently

The VF9 has lots of cubbies and areas to put things, especially for rear passengers. The rear doors feature a cupholder in the door pocket that’s also lined with a material that helps to suppress the sounds of cups or mugs moving around in the cupholder.

In Conclusion

So, what did Ms. Java think about the VF9 by the end of her review? She loved it. She found the 360-degree cameras helped a lot in tight parking lots and drive-thrus. With the number of cupholders and USB charging ports, the VF9 proves to be perfect for families to keep devices charged and drinks and snacks easily stored. While Kim mentioned that the VF9 is large, she said that the turning radius is excellent, there is great visibility, and “it really grows with you … the more I drive it around …”

VinFast VF 9 vs Hyundai IONIQ 9

The 2025 VinFast VF9 is one of the first three-row electric SUVs and also one of the least expensive when accounting for standard features and options that are generally costly extras on other vehicles. In our ongoing series of comparing the VF8 and VF9 to their main competitors, we have found that, even when up against the cream of the crop from Germany, Japan, Korea, and America, VinFast models hold up nicely… especially for a car company that’s only been around since 2017.

The First-Ever Hyundai Ioniq 9

This time, we’re taking a look at the newly released Hyundai Ioniq 9, the company’s first-ever three-row EV SUV. The Ioniq 9 shares some of its architecture with the Kia EV9, which has come up against the VF9 in a previous article. But, while there are some similarities between the Hyundai and the Kia, there are plenty of differences.

A Price That’ll Make You Take a Step Back

The 2026 Ioniq 9 has a starting price of $60,555 for the base, rear-wheel drive S trim. That jumps up to $79,090 for the top Calligraphy Design trim level. Amazingly, that trim level only comes in two colors that both cost $1,000 and has no options.

The VF9 Is Perfectly Priced

VinFast has priced the 2025 VF9 from $62,900 and is available in Eco and Plus. Both trim levels are standard with dual-motor all-wheel drive, Head-Up Display (HUD), a 123-kWh battery, and each has 402 horsepower with 457 lb-ft of torque. The Eco has an EPA-rated 330 miles of driving range, with the Plus offering 291 miles. Each trim also features vegan leather seating surfaces for ultimate luxury and comfort.

Inside The VF9 Is Where the Party Is

The interior of the VF9 features a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display that offers control of everything in the vehicle and shows your speed, navigation, music, and the like. Thanks to the standard HUD, you don’t need a gauge cluster as every piece of pertinent information is displayed on the windshield, so you never have to take your eyes off the road.

The Plus Trim Offers Some Unique Features

If you decide to get the Plus trim level, the standard rear bench seat in the Eco becomes captain’s chairs with a center console for rear passengers and a built-in wireless charger. The captain’s chairs are 8-way power adjustable with heated, ventilated, and massaging seats. Rear occupants will also get an 8-inch screen on the center console to view content.

The Hyundai May Seem Less Expensive, But…

While at first glance you may think that the Hyundai is cheaper, but not so fast. As previously mentioned, the base Ioniq 9 S model appears to be a bargain, but it is rear-wheel drive-only, does not offer a Head-Up Display, and is quite slow with its 215 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. It also only offers five extra miles of range at 335, so basically the same as the VF9. It isn’t until you step up to the SE model that costs $64,365, where you can get AWD, but still no HUD. The S and SE trims only offer cloth seats, which is kind of ridiculous for a so-called premium SUV that’s going to run you more than $60,000. You’ll have to spend $67,920 to get Hyundai’s H-Tex leather-like seats. And if you would like to have a Head-Up Display in your Ioniq 9, you’ll need to jump up and spend $76,590 for the second-highest Calligraphy trim level. That is absolutely ridiculous.

And You Get a Charger, And You Get a Charger

Whether you choose the Eco or Plus, the VinFast VF9 has all occupants covered in the device charging department. Standard on both trims is a total of six USB-A charge ports with one 90-watt USB-C port that can charge any laptop currently on the market. If you have the Plus, the second-row passengers will get two extra USB-A ports.

Sony RIDEVU Is the Gamechanger You’ve Been Waiting For

To keep everyone entertained, the VF9 is offered as standard with Sony RIDEVU, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s in-car service offering 2,000 shows and movies to watch from their archives. When parked, content can be viewed on the 15.6-inch display, or any device connected to the standard WiFi hotspot can access the app and watch movies or shows. Hyundai definitely doesn’t offer a service like that, let alone a free service.

Hyundai’s Warranty Just Can’t Keep Up

Don’t forget, VinFast vehicles come with the world’s best warranty with 10 years or 125,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage, plus 10 years and unlimited miles of coverage for the battery system. The Ioniq 9 is covered by a 5-year, 60,000-mile standard warranty, with the battery being taken care of for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

In 2025, there is no reason to settle for a good product that costs a lot of money when you can have a great product that doesn’t break the bank in comparison. VinFast may be a young company trying to make a name for itself, but the VF9 comes out swinging and isn’t just another EV SUV. It’s special and unique and offers buyers a fresh take they deserve.

VinFast VF9 Showcases the Need for Large, Comfortable EV SUVs

In a world where every buyer wants a three-row SUV for their family or just in case they end up having a family, VinFast is meeting the challenge by offering the VF9. There is a rising need for larger vehicles that can accommodate people in the third row and also be eco-friendly.

One of the Few 3-Row EV Options

What Comes Standard

Performance

Testing shows a consistent 6.7-seconds to get to 60 mph from a dead stop, which makes it reasonably quick. However, it will feel quicker when you’re behind the wheel because of the no-lag electric powertrain. Even though they share the same powertrain and all, the Eco actually gets 330 miles on a full charge while the Plus has 291 miles. Both are very competitive against more established brands.

Behind the third row, owners will find 7.5 cubic feet of space and 32.7 cubic feet when that row is folded flat. The front trunk, or frunk, can also hold an extra 3.5 cu.ft. of cargo, such as groceries, backpacks, and the like.

Device Charging

Even though the VF9 is still very new, reviewers have been saying that the third row is actually a nice place to be for kids and adults, with two USB-A charge ports, one for each seat. The second row is available as a bench in Eco models or with optional captain’s chairs in the Plus trim. This means you can choose to have either seven or eight seats in your car. If you choose the captain’s chairs, the second-row passengers will get a total of four USB-A ports to charge their devices. A 90-watt USB-C port is standard on all models in the second row. The Plus model also gets an 8-inch rear screen as standard.

Sony RIDEVU

Both trim levels also come standard with an in-car WiFi hotspot and Sony RIDEVU for free. Sony RIDEVU is a service provided by Sony Pictures Entertainment that offers users the ability watch 2,000 different shows and movies from their archive on any device connected to the vehicle’s WiFi or on the 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen display when the VF9 is parked. This makes camping with kids a whole new experience.

The VF9 Has the Ability to Tow

Speaking of camping, if you decide to take your family around the great outdoors, you can also tow up to 4,000 lbs when properly equipped. This means you can bring along a trailer, boat, jet ski, or what have you on your family adventures.
