Car Testing Mom Gives the VF 9 a Week-long Family Road Test

New VinFast VF9 Front View

Growing families inevitably mean that the family car will grow as well. Generations ago, this could have meant transitioning from a sedan to a station wagon. Today, we are all essentially driving wagons with our crossovers and SUVs, so the transition is more likely to be from a two-row to a three-row SUV. The latter can seat six, seven, or sometimes eight people securely and comfortably, though the comfort for adult passengers in the third row can vary significantly depending on the model.

Family Road Trip - Testing the VF9

The downside of all this space is usually mpg, as the vehicle size and the powerful engine needed to haul it can make these vehicles quite thirsty. One possible fix for that is the 3-row EV, which is far more efficient than its gas-powered counterparts. The VinFast VF 9 is one of the few 3-row SUVs on the market. Since these vehicles are often driven by moms, Jana Askeland, host of Real Mom Car Tours videos, drove the VF 9 for a week to share her impression of whether the VF 9 has what it takes to be the vehicle for American families. Ewing VinFast of Plano provides the highlights of her review.

With an exterior by Italian design firm Pininfarina, the VF 9 has a remarkably clean look on the front, rear, and profile, where the C-pillars taper in the middle to display the brand’s “V” logo. Fake vents, unusual trim pieces, or unnecessary character lines are absent everywhere. As a nice and unique touch, the key fob matches the vehicle’s exterior color.

The inside is similar, with a 15.6-inch screen covering most of the controls, including permanent climate controls on the lower edge for instant access. The traditional gauge cluster has been replaced by a head-up display that is standard across the model line. Redundant driver information can be found on the upper left of the screen.

Interior Dash and Steering Wheel in the New VinFast VF9

Mom drivers aren’t known for their lead feet. However, Jana still found the VF 9 impressive when acceleration is needed with 400 horsepower and 447 lb-ft of instant torque, enabling a transition from still to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds. Unlike the VF 8, both the Eco and Plus have the same power and dual motors for all-wheel drive.

Range on the VF 9 is an EPA-estimated 287 miles, and the combined MPGe (energy equivalent of miles per gallon) is 68, a figure nearly three times higher than what you’ll find on any gas-powered 3-row SUV. As with any EV, ownership is ideal when you can charge at home. But when you charge on the road, the VF 9 is estimated to go from 10% to 75% in about 31 minutes. This will give you 186 miles or about two and a half hours of driving at 75 mph before you reach 10% again. While this may not match gas-powered rivals, road trips with kids rarely go for two hours between stops anyway.

The test vehicle was a Plus trim with second-row captain’s chairs, accommodating a total of six passengers. Jana demonstrated how easy it is to access the third row using the tilt-tumble function of the second row seats, which creates plenty of space for entering and exiting the third row. Third-row passengers have access to charging ports and large windows to the outside, while the Plus model features a glass roof that extends overhead.

VinFast VF9 Interior Rear Cargo

In the meantime, first- and second-row passengers can enjoy heating, and on the Plus trim, ventilation, and even a massage function with multiple settings, which by itself should keep the kids entertained. When stopped, you can watch videos downloaded from YouTube or game apps on the large center screen. All models feature a wireless smartphone charger, Wi-Fi connection, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Cabin storage spaces are plentiful, and dropping or raising the rear seats is simple. At the same time, the VF 9 is a luxurious place to spend time, with the large center screen, attractive vegan leather that looks and feels great, electric door releases (with manual backup), and that truly impressive glass roof on the Plus.

Jana unsurprisingly considers safety a top priority and is supported by the VF 9’s comprehensive suite of standard safety and driver assist features across the entire model lineup, including:

  • Lane Keeping Assist, Centering, and Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Blind Sport Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Intelligent Speed Adaptation
  • Emergency Lane Keeping Assist
  • Highway and Traffic Assist systems
  • 360 Surround View Monitoring

Jana finds the VF 9 to be comfortable, powerful, full of family-friendly and safety features, and she loves the ambient lighting. She also finds security in the VinFast 10-year/125,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

The EV Report Finds the VF 8 Impressive

VinFast VF8 on the Road

The EV Report

The EV Report is dedicated to providing news, insights, and development trends related to electric vehicles. They are committed to informing about all areas of the EV industry, lifestyle, and available products. Thus, it comes as no surprise that they have turned their attention to VinFast, specifically, the VF 8.  They cover several aspects of the VF 8, and Ewing VinFast shares with you the highlights of what they found.

VinFast VF8 on the Road

The EV Report begins its review with this summary: “The VinFast VF 8 blends luxury, technology, and affordability, offering Baby Boomers and Gen X a stylish, tech-forward SUV with advanced safety, premium features, and competitive pricing.” They highlight these specific age groups because they have spent a lifetime adapting to and embracing high-tech products. Unspoken but perhaps implied is that these generations have had environmental concerns as a backdrop throughout their lives, leading to an interest in a no-emission vehicle.

VinFast VF8 Interior Touchscreen and Dash

They start with the VF 8’s design. VinFast enlisted acclaimed automobile designers Pininfarina for the model’s exterior. The renowned designer of models like the Ferrari Testarossa, 250 GT Lusso, and F40, among others, has also crafted well-known designs for Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Peugeot. While they can’t give this mid-size crossover the dramatic lines of an Italian sports car, they ensured the VF 8 has attractive proportions and that all curves and surfaces have a cohesive appearance.

VinFast VF8 Interior with Airbags

They also highlight the “Luxurious Interior,” pointing out features like the 15.6-inch center display, the single point location for all vehicle information, as well as the comfortable available vegan leather seating surfaces and heated and cooled seats. They describe it as a “meticulous attention to detail, creating a European-style interior that feels both premium and eco-conscious.”

They also pointed out the VF 8’s impressive range of safety features, such as 11 airbags, including dual knee airbags and an extra airbag between the front passengers. Additionally, it features the standard Advanced Driver-Assistance System, which includes:

  • Traffic Jam Assist (Level 2)
  • Highway Assist (Level 2)
  • Lane departure and Lane Center assist
  • Lane Centering Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Front automatic Emergency braking
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Front and rear parking assist
  • 360 Surround view monitoring

VinFast VF8 Rear View

Along with the above standard safety and driver assist aides, the VF 8 includes interior comfort features like an 8-way power driver seat and a 6-way power front passenger seat, both with heated capability and ambient interior lighting. Plus, the dual-motor system provides 349 hp of power, which powers the all-wheel drive. These are all on a model with a starting MSRP of $39,900. The Plus model, priced at $44,900, offers 402 horsepower along with a panoramic sunroof, 12-way and 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, and a 10-speaker audio system with a subwoofer.

VinFast VF8 Side View

This is familiar territory for a new car brand from a new country. Fifty years ago, the Japanese made a name for themselves in this country by offering vehicles with high-value features. Two decades later, Korean manufacturers introduced themselves in the same way. The only difference today is that VinFast enters with the drivetrain choice of the future, which is also new to established brands of all backgrounds. The EV Report summarizes their VF 8 Review this way: “For those ready to embrace a tech-forward, eco-conscious driving experience, the VF 8 offers a compelling blend of style, innovation, and value.” If they’re talking to you, visit Ewing VinFast, the #1 volume VinFast dealer in the country, for a test drive of the VF 8.

VinFast Expands Production Into India With New Factory

VF9 VinFast Lineup - The Future of Smart Mobility

VF9 VinFast Lineup - The Future of Smart Mobility

The demand for VinFast vehicles has been high globally. With new markets opening and enhancing current ones, it seems like the right step is to add more production capacity. This led to the opening of a new production facility in Thoothukudi, India, in the Tamil Nadu state. Located near the southern tip of India, the new plant has plenty of advantages with nearby roadways and ports for delivering new vehicles within the country and beyond.

VinFast VF9 Front View

The 400-acre site is the first VinFast production facility outside of Vietnam. It also marks the third production facility among five such projects to be built worldwide. The site includes multiple workshops: a Body Shop, Paint Shop, Assembly Shop, Quality Control Center, and a Logistics Hub. The site is set to bring 3,000-5,000 local workers into direct-hire jobs set to produce 50,000 vehicles, namely the VF 6 and VF 7. The facility can be scaled up to produce up to 150,000 vehicles. This is also a part of a global strategy to sell 200,000 vehicles in 2025, with a goal of 1,000,000 sales by 2030.

VinFast VF9 Interior

India has had a history of automotive production in the vast nation. The Tamil Nadu state is becoming a huge production hub due to its strategic geographical location for exports across the Indian Ocean, as well as to feed the growing domestic and regional market – including Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar – to name a few nearby national markets.

VinFast VF8 Logo

The other piece to opening up the plant in Tamil Nadu state is a push towards sustainable production and adding EVs into the mix. India also has a huge potential for a push towards vehicular electrification and acceptance of vehicles, such as the VF 6 and VF 7, on Indian roads.

VinFast VF8 Logo

To accomplish these goals in Southern India, VinFast has engaged with local companies to create a supply chain within the state, along with technology transfer and workforce development.

New VinFast

What does that mean for us? Eventually, the U.S. market may see Indian-produced VinFast vehicles if the lineup expands to include these smaller models. If we see a growth in demand for these EVs across the board, could we possibly see a plant on this side of the Pacific Ocean? Maybe in Texas?

The VF8 Challenges EV Trade-Off Presumptions

Modern EVs, while great, are often assumed to have more compromises than gas-powered cars. The main assumption is that buying an electric car means giving up things, like charge times versus gas refill times, or overall range. However, the VinFast VF8 continues to prove that “trade-offs” are a thing of the past when it comes to buying a vehicle that’s made for the future but available now.

VinFast VF8 Charging

The Price of the VF8 Warrants a Look

Many new and used car buyers are curious and interested in buying an EV, but many think an electric-powered car is so expensive to buy, own, and operate. Yet, that just isn’t the case. The VinFast VF8 starts from $39,900 and is available in just two trim levels, Eco and Plus. At less than $40,000, this is thousands of dollars less than most of its main rivals. In fact, we have covered many of those cars in our previous VF8 versus articles

VinFast VF8 Interior Dash, Steering Wheel, and Seating

VinFast Takes Standard Equipment Seriously

With such a low base price, you’d expect the VF8 to be devoid of any real luxury or amenities. Instead, VinFast has packed in the features to help buyers understand that you don’t have to overpay for the latest and greatest technology. For instance, very few EVs come with a Head-Up Display (HUD), or, if they do, it is an option added on by upgrading to a costly trim level. The VF8 comes standard with HUD, even on the base Eco model.

VinFast VF8 Charging

What Powers The VF8

Powering the VF8 is an 87.7 kWh battery pack that produces 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque in Eco trim and 402 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque for the Plus model. VinFast equips all cars with all-wheel drive as standard, something most other EVs can’t say they have until you spend thousands of dollars more on a higher trim level.

VinFast VF8 Cargo Space

Cargo Space

Practicality doesn’t fall by the wayside either, as the VF8 has ample space for five passengers, their luggage, and room left over. Owners will find 13.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 48.4 cubic feet when folded flat. In the front trunk, or frunk, lies an extra 2.7 cu.ft.

Special Modes

More than anything, though, is the power of the 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display that shows every relevant bit of information for your car. More so, features like Camp Mode and Pet Mode that let you set a temperature for the interior while you enjoy hanging out.

Furthermore, with the 15.6-inch infotainment system, the VF8 is able to play 2,000 movies and TV shows on the screen when parked, thanks to Sony Pictures Entertainment and its free Sony RIDEVU service. If the car is in motion, passengers can watch content on devices that are connected to the in-car WiFi hotspot.

VinFast Has a Warranty Like No Other

Unlike any other electric or gas-powered car on the market, every new VinFast has a 10-year, 125,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with a 10-year, unlimited-mile battery warranty. That’s how much VinFast believes in their cars. This means that if you decide to take the company up on one of their incredible lease offerings and then choose to buy the car when the 2-year lease is up, you will still have eight years’ worth of warranty left for the entire car, including the battery system. So, when you’re ready to make one of the best decisions of your life, Ewing VinFast of Plano will take great care of you.

VinFast VF 9 vs Hyundai IONIQ 9

VinFast VF9 Seats with Panoramic Roof

2025 VinFast VF9 Front Driver SideThe 2025 VinFast VF9 is one of the first three-row electric SUVs and also one of the least expensive when accounting for standard features and options that are generally costly extras on other vehicles. In our ongoing series of comparing the VF8 and VF9 to their main competitors, we have found that, even when up against the cream of the crop from Germany, Japan, Korea, and America, VinFast models hold up nicely… especially for a car company that’s only been around since 2017.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Front Side View

The First-Ever Hyundai Ioniq 9

This time, we’re taking a look at the newly released Hyundai Ioniq 9, the company’s first-ever three-row EV SUV. The Ioniq 9 shares some of its architecture with the Kia EV9, which has come up against the VF9 in a previous article. But, while there are some similarities between the Hyundai and the Kia, there are plenty of differences.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 9 Rear Side View

A Price That’ll Make You Take a Step Back

The 2026 Ioniq 9 has a starting price of $60,555 for the base, rear-wheel drive S trim. That jumps up to $79,090 for the top Calligraphy Design trim level. Amazingly, that trim level only comes in two colors that both cost $1,000 and has no options.

The VF9 Is Perfectly Priced

VinFast has priced the 2025 VF9 from $62,900 and is available in Eco and Plus. Both trim levels are standard with dual-motor all-wheel drive, Head-Up Display (HUD), a 123-kWh battery, and each has 402 horsepower with 457 lb-ft of torque. The Eco has an EPA-rated 330 miles of driving range, with the Plus offering 291 miles. Each trim also features vegan leather seating surfaces for ultimate luxury and comfort.

VinFast VF9 Interior Front Dash

Inside The VF9 Is Where the Party Is

The interior of the VF9 features a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display that offers control of everything in the vehicle and shows your speed, navigation, music, and the like. Thanks to the standard HUD, you don’t need a gauge cluster as every piece of pertinent information is displayed on the windshield, so you never have to take your eyes off the road.

VinFast VF9 Seats with Panoramic Roof

The Plus Trim Offers Some Unique Features

If you decide to get the Plus trim level, the standard rear bench seat in the Eco becomes captain’s chairs with a center console for rear passengers and a built-in wireless charger. The captain’s chairs are 8-way power adjustable with heated, ventilated, and massaging seats. Rear occupants will also get an 8-inch screen on the center console to view content.

The Hyundai May Seem Less Expensive, But…

While at first glance you may think that the Hyundai is cheaper, but not so fast. As previously mentioned, the base Ioniq 9 S model appears to be a bargain, but it is rear-wheel drive-only, does not offer a Head-Up Display, and is quite slow with its 215 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. It also only offers five extra miles of range at 335, so basically the same as the VF9. It isn’t until you step up to the SE model that costs $64,365, where you can get AWD, but still no HUD. The S and SE trims only offer cloth seats, which is kind of ridiculous for a so-called premium SUV that’s going to run you more than $60,000. You’ll have to spend $67,920 to get Hyundai’s H-Tex leather-like seats. And if you would like to have a Head-Up Display in your Ioniq 9, you’ll need to jump up and spend $76,590 for the second-highest Calligraphy trim level. That is absolutely ridiculous.

VinFast VF9 Charging

And You Get a Charger, And You Get a Charger

Whether you choose the Eco or Plus, the VinFast VF9 has all occupants covered in the device charging department. Standard on both trims is a total of six USB-A charge ports with one 90-watt USB-C port that can charge any laptop currently on the market. If you have the Plus, the second-row passengers will get two extra USB-A ports.

Sony RIDEVU Is the Gamechanger You’ve Been Waiting For

To keep everyone entertained, the VF9 is offered as standard with Sony RIDEVU, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s in-car service offering 2,000 shows and movies to watch from their archives. When parked, content can be viewed on the 15.6-inch display, or any device connected to the standard WiFi hotspot can access the app and watch movies or shows. Hyundai definitely doesn’t offer a service like that, let alone a free service.

New VinFast VF9 Frunk

Hyundai’s Warranty Just Can’t Keep Up

Don’t forget, VinFast vehicles come with the world’s best warranty with 10 years or 125,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage, plus 10 years and unlimited miles of coverage for the battery system. The Ioniq 9 is covered by a 5-year, 60,000-mile standard warranty, with the battery being taken care of for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

2025 VinFast VF9 Cargo Space

Don’t Settle for Good When You Can Have Great

In 2025, there is no reason to settle for a good product that costs a lot of money when you can have a great product that doesn’t break the bank in comparison. VinFast may be a young company trying to make a name for itself, but the VF9 comes out swinging and isn’t just another EV SUV. It’s special and unique and offers buyers a fresh take they deserve.
