VinFast VF9 vs Tesla Model X

When it comes to electric SUVs, Tesla is kind of the OG in this department with the Model X. It has enjoyed a number of years as the premier luxury electric SUV. However, that’s slowly but surely been changing since its debut in 2015. With vehicles like the VinFast VF9, the Model X is aging in comparison. Or is it? Let’s compare the two in this week’s versus.

Meet The Tesla Model X

Like the VinFast VF9, the Tesla Model X only has two flavors for buyers: the Model X and the Model X Plaid. Unlike the VF9, though, it is pricey. How pricey? Well, here’s where it gets weird: Tesla says the Model X has a starting price of $65,990… but then, in fine print, it mentions, “Includes any applicable federal tax credits and estimated gas savings.” So, that means you can add back the $7,500 federal tax credit to better understand the base price, but what are the estimated gas savings? That’s just deceptive practices. Car and Driver says the Model X starts from $81,630, while MotorTrend says it is priced from $79,990. Tesla says the Model X Plaid retails for $88,490, but the car magazines say $94,990 and $96,630, respectively. Short of calling or going to a Tesla dealer and asking, the price is anyone’s guess.

Powertrain Options

When choosing the base Model X, buyers will get a dual-motor and all-wheel drive with an output of 670 horsepower, according to Tesla, and 713 lb-ft of torque, according to Car and Driver (Tesla does not list torque for the standard model). However, the tri-motor Model X Plaid features a massive 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. Those are wild power numbers, which makes sense since the Plaid can reach 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, while the standard model is a bit slower at 3.3 seconds. The EPA says that the standard Model X has 329 miles of range with 20-inch wheels. However, Tesla says this number drops to 322 when optioning the 22-inch wheels. The Plaid model has 314 miles of EPA-estimated range with the standard wheels, while the optional 22s will force that range down to about 300 miles.

Meet The Honest VF9

Finally, we come to the star of the evening, the VF9, which is available in either Eco or Plus trim levels and starts from $71,000. Eco models will give buyers a healthy 330-mile driving range, and Plus models offer 291 miles, which makes the VF9 about equal to the Model X. Like the Model X, all VF9 models come standard with all-wheel drive, and both also use dual-motor setups. The 123 kWh battery pack provides 402 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque. This gives the VinFast plenty of oomph, with a claimed 0-60 of roughly 6.5 seconds. The VF9 comes standard with a Head-Up Display (HUD), something most other vehicles can’t attest to, so drivers never have to take their eyes off the road to see navigation information, range, music, and more.

Sony RIDEVU Is Amazing

Something that neither Tesla nor any other EV on the market can lay claim to is Sony RIDEVU. RIDEVU allows passengers in the VF9 to watch 2,000 different Sony-owned movies and TV shows either on the main infotainment screen when the vehicle is in park or on any device that is on the in-car WiFi. The 2025 VF9 offers drivers and passengers a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen display plus six standard USB-A ports with one 90-watt USB-C port, which means two per row. Buyers who opt for captain’s chairs will find two extra USB-A ports in the center console.

Safety First

The Tesla, however, only gets a 4-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and an 8-year, 150,000-mile battery warranty. No one’s really keeping score here, but that seems like a win for the VF9.

Which To Get…

Ultimately, which one should you choose, the Tesla Model X or the VinFast VF9? It’s your money, and you should spend it as you see fit. But, since you asked, when taking into consideration the odd pricing alone, the Tesla Model X doesn’t seem too honest. And then, once you look at the battery warranty, you notice it is 150,000 miles versus unlimited miles for the VF9. If you just want to show off at traffic lights, maybe the Tesla is the best car for your needs. However, if you want a vehicle that’s focused on quality over bragging rights, then perhaps the VinFast is the right car.

How Does Fast Charging Affect Battery Health

A battery is a battery, whether it’s in your phone, a camera, or a car. Like every other piece of technology, batteries will slowly degrade over time. It’s perfectly normal and natural. However, there are things you can do to mitigate battery degradation in devices. While it is rare, sometimes batteries can lose some of their abilities more quickly, which is why VinFast has the best battery warranty in the business with its 10-year, unlimited-mile warranty.

Learning How to Charge

Remember back in the day when cell phones were first coming out? It was recommended to charge them to full, then let them fully discharge on their own, and then from there, you could use them as normal. Some Studies Show Promising Results

Luckily for EV owners, some studies show that using fast chargers can have negligible degradation effects over time. That being said, if you do lots of long-distance traveling and utilize Level 3 chargers, not only will you be spending more money to charge your car, but over time, this could contribute to your battery health dwindling from 100% of capacity down to 90 or so percent after a couple of years of doing this. That means that your maximum range will drop by 10%.

When In Doubt, Charge at Home

There is still plenty of testing to be done to determine how batteries will last over time when charged more quickly and subjected to heat and stress. This is why it’s always best to charge your VinFast at home as much as possible.

A Tesla Doesn’t Age So Well

They’ve only styled some of the most influential and beautiful vehicles ever for Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Cadillac, Maserati, Volvo, Jaguar, of course VinFast, and more.

A Tesla Warranty Isn’t So Special

A key reason to move away from a Tesla and into a VinFast is the warranty. Tesla’s battery warranty is eight years and anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on the car you have. The VF9 is also competitive, boasting a 6.5-second 0-60 time. Two of the bestselling gas-powered, 3-row SUVs on the market, the Kia Telluride and Toyota Highlander, both get to 60 mph in about 7-7.5 seconds. Sure, the VinFast vehicles aren’t setting land speed records, but they are also faster than the average traffic.

One thing that you will not be able to get in any current Tesla model is Sony RIDEVU. VinFast VF9 Versus Kia EV9

Well, we’re back, this time comparing the latest VinFast EV SUV, the VF9, against a formidable opponent, the Kia EV9. While the three-row Kia EV9 has been around for a year now, it’s still a very new kid on the block. And while the VF9 is just going on sale, the three-row electric SUV from VinFast is hitting the market with a ton of standard safety equipment, very useful features, and no doubt the best warranty of any EV.

What Is the EV9 About?

The Kia EV9 gives customers five different trim levels to decide between, the need to choose between rear- and all-wheel drive, as well as two different motor options. The base model EV9 Light has rear-wheel drive and develops 215 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with a 76.1-kWh battery pack, which Kia says is good for 230 miles of range. Stepping up to the Long Range trim gives buyers a 99.8-kWh battery that is good for 304 miles. The Wind, Land, and GT-Line trims feature the same 99.8-kWh battery but with e-AWD. Each output 379 combined horsepower from the front and rear motors and up to 516 lb-ft of torque. The range of the Wind and Land is 280 miles, with the GT-Line driving for 270 miles. While Kia gives potential buyers lots of options, VinFast tries to make things easier for buyers.

What Does the VF9 Offer?

The VinFast VF9 offers buyers the ability to choose between two trim levels, Eco and Plus. The Eco offers 330 miles of range while the Plus has 291 miles of range. No matter the model you choose, both come standard with dual motors, a 123-kWh battery, and all-wheel drive with 402 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque. Unlike most SUVs on the market, the VF9 comes standard with a Head-Up Display (HUD), a feature that is only on the top-of-the-line EV9 GT-Line trim.

Leasing and Charging the VF9

For those looking to buy or lease the VF9 Plus, you can choose between a second-row bench or captain’s chairs, allowing for seating of six or seven passengers. The VF9 can charge from 10% to 70% in just 35 minutes with a Level 3 DC fast charger. Most buyers will be charging their cars at home, and VinFast offers its own charger that can be purchased for $599 and easily installed by a qualified professional. VinFast is offering an incredible lease deal of just $529 per month with $2,000 down for 24 months.

Sony RIDEVU Is Unique to VinFast

The VF9 has one major surprise up its sleeve with a feature that no other brand offers: Sony RIDEVU. RIDEVU is Sony Pictures Entertainment’s way of giving VinFast customers the ability to watch 2,000 different Sony-owned movies and TV shows either on the main 15.6-inch infotainment screen when the vehicle is in park, or on any device that is attached to the in-car WiFi system.

A Warranty Like No Other

Kia is well known for offering buyers a great warranty on its gas model cars. However, when it comes to its electric offerings, the Korean car manufacturer can’t really come close to VinFast. The EV9 comes with a 4-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain/battery warranty. VinFast VF8 Versus Genesis GV60

Well, folks, it’s that time again where we dive in and take a look at a rival of the new and hot VinFast VF8. This time we are going through the 2024 Genesis GV60. Does it have any secrets that it doesn’t want us to know? Like the VF8, it too is a brand new, first-generation electric vehicle.

The Genesis GV60 Is Welcomed to the Ring

The Genesis GV60 comes in four different flavors, including Standard RWD, Standard AWD, Advanced AWD, and Performance AWD. The Standard RWD car features a single rear-mounted motor with 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft, with an estimated range of 294 miles. The Standard AWD has dual motors that produce 314 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque and can drive up to 264 miles. The Advanced AWD trim can drive 248 miles and has the same exact power and torque as the Standard AWD GV60. Finally, there is the Performance AWD that has 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque with an estimated range of 235 miles. The GV60 can only tow 2,000 pounds, which is less than the 4,000 pounds that the VinFast is able to tow.

Ridiculous Pricing

For 2024 the Standard RWD has a base MSRP of $53,700—more than the price of a fully loaded top-of-the-line VinFast VF8 Plus trim. Also, something that’s very odd: the GV60 comes in eight different colors—and seven of them cost $650 extra. The only free color for any of the trim levels is Alta White. Even the top-of-the-line Performance AWD that starts at $71,250 forces you to pay for any color other than Alta White. How weird is that?

Enter the Reining Champ, the VF8

So, as previously mentioned, the base Genesis is more costly than the fully loaded price of the VF8. The VinFast is available in just two trims to keep the confusion and guessing game out of buying your VF8. The VF8 Eco has a base price of $47,325, and the Plus trim starts at $51,800. Both VF8 trims have dual motors with 87.7-kWh batteries that give Eco models 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and 402 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque for the Plus trims. Also, unlike the Genesis, and most other EVs, the VinFast comes standard with all-wheel drive. The EPA says drivers can expect 264 miles for Eco models and 243 miles for Plus models between charges. While some of the GV60 trims are clearly more performance-oriented, the VF8 isn’t exactly slow. It will get to 60 mph in just 5.9 or 5.5 seconds for the Eco and Plus, respectively.

Interior and Frunk Space

When it comes to interior space, the VF8 features 13.2 cu-ft of space behind the second row of seats and 48.4 when they’re folded. The Genesis, however, wins this battle with 24 cu-ft behind the second row and 54.7 cu-ft with the rear seats folded. But, the VinFast makes up for that with 2.7 cu-ft of space in the front trunk, or frunk area. The GV60 has just 0.7 cu-ft. This also shows something else that’s interesting. The Genesis has 10.8 more cubes of space behind the rear seats, but only 6.3 when the rear seats are folded? That means that Genesis has some inefficiencies when it comes to the interior layout’s usable space.

Leasing a VinFast Is Way More Cost Effective

No matter what you think of the Genesis GV60, it falls through the floor when you compare price and value. Buyers can walk into Ewing VinFast of Plano right now and lease a VF8 Eco for just $199 per month for 36 months with $0 down and 10,000 miles per year. For only $249 per month, you can get the top-of-the-line Plus trim. Oh, and VinFast offers a 10-year, 125,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with a 10-year, unlimited-mile battery warranty. You can still lease the GV60, of course, but it will cost you $721 per month for 36 months, with $0 down. Or, if you put down $5,999, you can save a little bit of money and only pay $646 per month for the same terms as the VinFast. Worse yet, Genesis only offers a 5-year, 60,000-mile standard warranty with an extra 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain/battery warranty.

Perception Clouds Your Judgement

Let’s be real for a second. Can the Genesis GV60 really be so good that you would be willing to pay over three times more per month than for the VinFast? Is it worth it? I have to tell you, I have never walked into a store and asked to be charged more just because I thought the product might be better. If someone tells you that a ribeye steak is priced higher than chuck because it’s inherently better, he or she is either lying to you or just doesn’t know how to cook meat. Any good chef will tell you that, when prepared properly, a good cut of chuck can absolutely rival any other expensive piece of meat you have ever enjoyed. Perception is what drives us to think about value. VinFast doesn’t feel the need to overcharge you for a perception.
