The VinFast VF 8 Eases into Everyday Family Life

EVs can be seen as ideal commuter cars because they can be charged at home, they are exceptionally efficient, and they operate smoothly in stop-and-go traffic. But anecdotes from VinFast owners show how quickly and easily the VF8 has become part of family life. Ewing VinFast shares some of these stories.

Last year (2024), Michael took his family on a round trip from Montreal to Orlando in the family VF8. The journey wasn’t perfect, facing setbacks like broken charging stations, traffic accidents, and detours that increased the expected driving time and distance. Overall, however, Michael was quite pleased with how the VF8 managed everything. The air conditioning worked well in the southern summer heat, and the quiet cabin allowed everyone to talk normally during long stretches on the highway.

“I had no issues at all with the vehicle,” said Michael after the 3,100-mile round trip, which is exactly the kind of journey that reveals what a car is really made of. It shows that EVs are no longer just experimental curiosities that need to be limited to simple commuting or daily driving. Families trust them—even on their longest trips. Their quiet operation and smooth drivetrain are qualities people have long associated with luxury vehicles. Michael remarked, “The VinFast was very comfortable, especially the rear seats.”

While the Orlando round trip wasn’t their first family outing in their VF8, it was the longest so far and made an impression. The dual motors kept confidence high in wet weather. When it turned hot, “The air conditioning and ventilated seats were top-notch,” said Michael.

Jean-Philippe’s Gaspésie’s trip included towing as a factor, he recalled to VinFast about his VF8. Towing can add stress to any trip, but regarding his VF 8, Gaspésie observed, The car handled really well with the trailer, powerful going uphill and during passing.” He even encountered the stereotypical EV fear of running out of charge, arriving at his final charging stop with just a 1% state of charge, reading less than 2.5 miles remaining. But the VF8 readings indicated it was going to make it; it did, and Gaspésie is happy with his experience.

Ewing VinFast likes to hear this because, as a mid-size crossover, the VF8 was designed for all types of household travel, from the most routine daily drive to cross-country trips, even with a trailer in tow. The VF9, with seating for six or seven, adds another step to this overall do-anything utility. It also shows that with a little planning, like combining charging times with meals, VinFast vehicles can provide green transportation with no sacrifices for the entire family.

Inside EVs Talks About the VF8 Ownership Experience

VinFast is an up-and-coming car manufacturer. After having just started delivering cars to the U.S. market in 2023, the VF8, their first EV to showrooms, has had some growing pains. However, the company has been quick to send software updates over the air so that customers aren’t left in weird or scary situations. A review from the YouTube channel Out Of Spec goes over their lease of a brand new VF8 and their road trip back to Colorado.

A YouTube Review

Inside EVs has a friendly relationship with Out Of Spec and published their 3,400-mile review of a 2024 Deep Ocean VF8. The author, who has driven a VF8 before, said, “… Yet its feature set is good, it’s comfortable enough and hasn’t left her stranded, so her review is pretty positive. It’s a good reminder that, for most people, a car doesn’t have to be the most competitive or flawless vehicle to be satisfying to own.”

What Car Reviewers Tend to Forget About Car Buyers

Some car reviewers forget that normal people who just want a solid car to drive from point A to point B buy these vehicles. Most car buyers aren’t worried about 0-60 or ¼-mile times or even how fast the top speed is. Is it safe? Is it comfortable? Will it work when I start it up to go to work and then home? If the answers to three questions are yes, then that’s what customers want to buy.

VinFast Is Listening to Customers

Francie, the VF8’s actual driver, talked about the initial hiccups. One error message had her taking the car to her local VinFast service center for a software fix. Other than that, the car has been getting better through updates, and she doesn’t really have any problems with it.

What Does She Think About the VF8 After A Few Months?

After having it for a few months, what does Francie now think of her VinFast? InsideEVs quotes her as saying, “Still, she likes the car. She notes that most Vinfast owners are happy with their, too, appreciating the styling, tech features and uniqueness of the VF8. She likes that it has a “Dog Mode” to protect her pup, Rafiki, something that’s still not available on most EVs. Plus the ZF-made highway driving assistance tech works well, keeping her centered in the lane while still allowing her to steer wide of big trailers and semis. Along with comfortable seats and cool ambient lighting, the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite makes the VF8 a decent road trip car.”
