EV Charging Infrastructure Is Quietly, Steadily Growing

The biggest EV hurdle—access to convenient and reliable public chargers—has been quietly improving, with numbers increasing faster than in previous years. Paren is a data analytics company that monitors the growth of public charging stations. It shows that multiple charging networks are on track to add 3,000 more DC fast charging stations in 2025 compared to 2024. Ewing Vinfast provides some details.

The year 2024 was significant for public charger growth, but the process encountered some obstacles, including permitting and charger vandalism. Although many thought this would slow down or stop charger expansion, it now seems these were more like speed bumps than roadblocks. Paren chief analyst Loren McDonald sees signs of things changing for the better. “The fast-charging industry is deploying new [DC fast-charging] ports and stations at its highest pace ever in the U.S.,” McDonald posted on LinkedIn this week. “Don’t believe the FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt). The charging industry is moving full speed ahead, building larger, higher-power stations with amenities, greater reliability, and a better customer experience.”

One ominous sign occurred in April 2024 when Elon Musk seemingly impulsively fired his entire Supercharger team. Ironically, the incident happened just as many EV manufacturers were pledging to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) port in future vehicles, supply NACS adaptors for their current EV models, and thus increase business at Tesla Supercharger stations. The adapters had a shaky start but are now becoming readily available, and the Supercharger side of the business appears to be a major growth opportunity.

McDonald points to more companies building charging networks, including automakers like Mercedes-Benz and Rivian. It is possibly analogous to the early sixties when electronics manufacturers helped support color production for TV shows to boost color TV sales.

Additionally, companies focused on highway travel, such as Pilot/Flying J truck stops, Buc-ees, and Walmart—which simply have locations everywhere—see opportunities and are adding charging stations. This expansion is also coming from dedicated charging firms like Ionna and BP Pulse. Another development is that you are starting to see more amenities at these locations, including covered areas, bathrooms, and even customer lounges. McDonald calls this the “Charging 2.0” era and believes it could lead to a bigger growth leap than what the industry has experienced so far.

No manufacturer wanted to fall behind in the EV transition, and that may have led to more vehicles being produced before the infrastructure could support them—but now the infrastructure is catching up. Meanwhile, multiple studies show that EV owners rarely go back to gas-powered vehicles, which is a positive sign for the industry and indicates a steady, long-term flow of charging customers even without sharp increases in EV sales.

Pretty much every major tire brand makes an EV-specific tire, and while some will tell you there’s some marketing magic behind selling EV tires, there are some good reasons to buy them over a normal set of tires.

Carmakers and Their Relationships to Tire Companies

Car companies are beginning to work with tire manufacturers to produce model-specific tires for their cars, and VinFast has undoubtedly gone through rigorous testing to know which tires are the best for the VF8 and VF9. The biggest thing to keep in mind when tire shopping is to look at tires that will carry the load of your car. EVs tend to weigh more than gas-powered cars due to the number of batteries needed to power them.

Remember that EVs are around 10% heavier than an internal combustion car, meaning they will usually have more wear on tires. One new type of tire that may be beneficial to some owners is High Load (HL) tires. High Load tires are becoming part of the new standard tires for certain EVs as they can handle more of a vehicle’s overall load. Hl means that it will handle the vehicle’s curb weight plus everything it carries, i.e., passengers, luggage, etc. The VF8 has a tire load index of 103, which means that each tire, when filled to its max psi, can carry 1,929 lbs per tire. Multiply that by four, and you have tires that can handle 7,716 lbs. The VF8 weighs about 5,800 lbs, which means it can carry an extra 1,916 lbs worth of people and stuff. However, that weight can add up quickly.

Why Do EVs Have Less Road Noise?

In general, EVs actually have less road and harsh noises entering the cabin when driving down the road than cars with an internal combustion engine. One of the main reasons why automakers and tire companies want you to buy EV-specific tires is because they are engineered to have lower rolling resistance and allow less road noise into the cabin with a feature called Noise Reduction Technology. This involves tire companies like Goodyear, Michelin, Continental, and more, insulating the tire so that it’s less hollow and/or has different tread patterns, therefore reducing vibrations.

What About UHP Tires?

When it’s time to get new tires for your VF8 or VF9, you should take caution before buying performance-oriented EV tires. There are various electric cars that can benefit from having Ultra-High Performance (UHP) tires. However, many EVs, like VinFast models, don’t really need them, as they can lower the efficiency of your car through extra rolling resistance. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and non-performance-oriented EVs do come standard with low-rolling-resistance tires to maximize the vehicle’s fuel mileage or electric range.
